Restriction modification system

The restriction modification system is used by prokaryotic organisms (i.e., bacteria) to protect themselves from foreign DNA such as bacteriophage. Restriction enzymes have specificity for non-methylated DNA sequences which are recognized and cleaved at sequence specific sites by restriction enzymes.
