A mood swing is an extreme change in mood.
Mood swings are also associated with mood disorders, of which the classic example is bipolar disorder.
Also, PMS can cause mood swings in women. Mood swings frequently occur during the perimenopause and menopause, a time when hormonal changes can temporarily upset brain chemistry and facilitate rapid changes in mood. This is not dangerous and a normal part of menopause for many women. As hormones stabilize, mood swings eventually calm down and disappear on their own.
