Direct dial is a means of placing a long distance telephone call in which the person making the call dials the number directly rather than going through an operator. It is the least expensive means of making a telephone call, as compared with operator-assisted telephone calls, such as long distance calls made at a pay phone, collect or person-to-person calls.
