The term rotation can be used in several ways and includes various topics. Generally, it is used to denote (in 3D) the rotation of movement of a rigid body in such a way that any given point of that body remains at a constant distance from some fixed line (in 2D: point).
More specifically, it is applicable to:
- The farming practice of crop rotation.
- The business management approach of job rotation.
- The retail practice of rotating stock (especially fresh produce/bread) to ensure the stock with the soonest sell by date is at the front of the shelf - meaning it will be sold first.
In physics:
- The differential rotation of objects.
- The optical rotation polarization.
In anatomy:
- The motion of a body part about its axis.
In geometry and mathematics:
- A transformation in the rotation group
- A coordinate rotation is the transformation of coordinate systems.
- An improper rotation producing an inversion.
In music:
- An order operation that may be performed on a set of pitches or pitch classes, where the last member is placed first. Sets which may be mapped onto each other through rotation are rotationally equivalent. See: transformation, permutation
- In music radio, the term refers to how often a song is played. See spin (radio).
Other:
- In baseball pitching, the rotation is the group of starting pitchers for a team, and the order in which they pitch.
- The Rotation Speed of an aircraft is the speed required at take-off for the nose to begin lifting off the runway.
- In elections, Robson Rotation is the practice of printing multiple ballots for an election, each having the candidates listed in a different order.
