Gateway has several meanings. It may often share meanings with the term gate.

Computer Terminology

• Gateway is a common term in telecommunications; see gateway (telecommunications). A gateway, in the aforementioned sense, is very popular, as it is a computer or a network that allows access to another computer or network.
• Gateway is a phrase used by webmasters and search engine optimizers to describe a webpage designed to attract visitors and search engines to a particular website. A typical gateway page is small, simple and highly optimized. Its primary goal is to attract visitors searching for relevant key words or phrases, and provide hyperlinks to pages within the website.
• Gateway is also a technical term for the software interface between a web-based shopping cart (or order form) and a merchant account (See also electronic commerce and payment gateway).

• Gateway International Raceway is a racetrack in Madison, Illinois
• Gateway National Recreation Area is a string of parks and beaches in New York City and New Jersey.

• Gateway is also a name of a 1976 novel by Frederik Pohl, the first book of the Heechee series and winner of the Hugo Award and Nebula Award; see Gateway (novel)
