Template:Wiktionarypar Segmentation is a general term for the division or partition of something into separate pieces or segments. In specialized senses, it could mean:
- Segmentation (image processing), the partitioning of a digital image into two or more regions.
- In biology:
- A morphogenesis process that divides a metazoan body into a series of semi-repetitive segments.
- segmentation (biology), the structure that results from said process.
- Segmentation (music), the breaking down of music into relatively simpler and smaller parts.
- In computing:
- Segmentation (memory), the division of main memory into memory subsystems.
- Network segmentation, the splitting of a computer network into subnetworks, each being a network segment or network layer.
- Image Segmentation, the devision of an image into numerous sub-images, sections or regions for use in Computer Vision
- In natural language processing:
- Speech segmentation, the identification of word boundaries in speech.
- Text segmentation, the identification of lexical units in certain scripts, like written Chinese and Japanese.
- Market segmentation, the partitioning of a market into smaller groups.
