The Alabama Territory was a historic, organized territory of the United States that was formed by the eastern portion of the Mississippi Territory. The territory was organized March 3, 1817, shortly before Mississippi became a state. St. Stephens was the only territorial capital; and William Wyatt Bibb was the only territorial governor. Just two years later, on December 14, 1819, Alabama was admitted to the union as the 22nd U.S. state.
