In contract bridge, each of the four players (commencing with the dealer) is given the opportunity to make the first bid in the auction. The player who makes the first bid is said to "open" and the player is thereafter referred to, for the balance of the hand, as the "opener." The term "opening" refers to the act of making the opening bid (as in "Wilkes is opening with a four-card major suit") or, more frequently, to the actual opening bid itself (as in "The Italians' eccentric one spade opening created havoc for their American opponents.")
