Image:UuU.png On the 10th March 2004, User:Ludraman asked on the village pump. "Just out of interest - what is the oldest article on Wikipedia. Shouldn't we frame it and put it on display somewhere?! :-)". This page represents the results found in answering that query:

Special:Ancientpages lists those pages that haven't been edited for the longest time. At the time of writing these articles have remained unchanged for about one and a half years.

During the conversion from Phase 1 software to Phase 2 software in software the history of most pages was temporarily lost. User:Brion VIBBER later rescued all historical page edit data that were still around and merged into the Phase 2 and later Phase 3 (now MediaWiki) database. Some of the very oldest page histories are believed to be lost completely, however many of the very oldest edits have been kept.

Some old edits found by hand were:

User:Andre Engels then ran a SQL query and found the oldest existing page:

The page in question is UuU (now a redirect to the Wikipedia namespace to preserve the article), version 16 January 2001, the second day of Wikipedia.

Also from January 16th:

Unfortunately these diff links now fail as someone deleted ScottMoonen. A typical example of some modern users not caring about internet etiquette not to break links! It would never have happened in Wikipedia's olden days. Pcb21| Pete 11:09, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)
In fact I got so mad about that that I undeleted the page - I couldn't find any evidence of a deletion debate. Pcb21| Pete 11:11, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)
TransporT also got deleted, I've undeleted it since there's no harm in having a disused redirect hanging around. Bryan 22:21, 19 November 2005 (UTC)

There are 11 pages from 17 January, not including 6 more versions of ScottMoonen. The oldest page for which there is no break in the history because of being changed into a redirect is List of female tennis players, which has a version from 6 February 2001. This page will have been moved nevertheless as it is not in CamelCase - it just was moved with moving the history.

It is believed Jimbo said he made the first ever edit to Wikipedia, a test edit.
