Sound recording of radio contact with Space Shuttle Columbia on its final approach. Public Domain.

Please don't edit this recording down as it is very strange as the general theory of the loss of radio contact is that no further communications arrived from the shuttle after the "Roger, uh, buh..." comment (0:54). However, if one listens carefully, there are obvious attempts to communicate to ground from members on the shuttle after this.

From 1:07 to 1:23, there is what sounds at first to be simply static. If one listens carefully, he or she should be able to hear vocalizations. However, this is not as ominous as the real final message from Columbia.

At 1:50 on this recording, there is obvious speech emanating from the shuttle but as of yet no one has been able to correctly discern what was said. It has been speculated that the words are, "We are downwind," "We are ballasting," or "We are bouncing."
