HMS Neptune

Nine ships of the Royal Navy have been named HMS Neptune after the Roman god of the ocean.

• Neptune, launched in 1683, was a 2nd rate of 90 guns that was twice rebuilt before being renamed Torbay in her new incarnation as a 3rd rate in 1750.
• Neptune was a 2nd rate ship of the line of 98 guns. She fought at the battle of Trafalgar.
• Neptune, launched in 1874, was an ironclad battleship.
• The eighth Neptune was an early Dreadnought battleship.
• The ninth Neptune was a Leander-class cruiser sunk in 1941.
• Neptune is the name given to HMNB Clyde.
