The river Svir (Свирь, Finnish: Syväri) connects Lake Onega with Lake Ladoga in Russia, thus connecting the two largest lakes of Europe, and is considered the southern border of East Karelia. The river flows past the Alexander-Svirsky Monastery, which used to house one of the most infamous gulags.Template:Northwest-Russia-geo-stub
