Humpolec (German: Gumpolds or Humpoltz) is a town in the Vysočina Region of the Czech Republic, situated south-east of Prague and roughly halfway between the Czech capital and Brno, on the northwestern edge of the Bohemian-Moravian highlands (Českomoravská Vrchovina).
Humpolec was founded at the beginning of the 13th century, becoming a town status some 100 years later. Humpolec is birthplace of Aleš Hrdlička, well-known American anthropologist, Jan Zábrana, one of the greatest Bohemian writers and translators of 20th century, Ivan Martin Jirous, poet, underground writer and member of anticommunist opposition. In nearby village of Kaliště, Bohemian composer Gustav Mahler was born.
