The Substance of Life
The Turaga call Protodermis the 'Substance of Life', named so because everything in the Bionicle universe is made of it, except for the air, which is something totally different, and the water surrounding the island of Mata Nui. The Matoran do not eat it. The biomechanical bodies of the Matoran are made with it. The forges of Ta-Metru construct and forge masks and launchers and tools and disks with it, making it extremely vital to the Matoran. Without it, nothing would be. It is a somewhat magical substance, with very interesting applications.
Forms
Protodermis comes in the following six forms:
- Solid Protodermis Is the most commen type of protodermis.It is The Bionicle world's equilvent to Rock.It was mined for in Onu-koro.
- Frozen Protodermis is liquid Protodermis in the form of ice. It is what the knowledge towers of Ko-Metru are made of.
- Liquid Protodermis is simply a liquid form of solid Protodermis. It flows in the canals of Ga-Metru, and exists in the Silver Sea. It is the equivalent of water for the Matoran.
- Molten Protodermis is Molten Solid Protodermis and is the Bionicle universes equilvent to lava.
- Energized Protodermis is a remarkable variation of Protodermis. In some cases, it causes transformations, and has been used to form the Toa Nuva, Rahkshi, but will often destroy what it comes into contact with, such as the Karzahni plant. Ironically, it also has some living properties itself. A sentient mass of it was discovered by the Toa Metru in Bionicle Adventures 6, Maze of Shadows.
- Purified Protodermis the 'pure' form of Protodermis. It is the purified form of Liquid Protodermis.When purifed, it takes a bluish color and it is purified at the Great Temple in Ga-Metru. It is used to make Kanoka Disks, furniture, etc.
- Crystallized Protodermis is protodermis that is shaped into crystalline structures. This substance is produced by the staff of the Shadowed One.
Protodermis had an early name, Biodermis, in Bionicle.com's "Mata Nui Online Game", also known as MNOLG.
Name
Protodermis is the combination of Latin words Proto- (meaning "first") and -Dermis (meaning "skin" or "Layer of tissue"), thus directly meaning "first skin". This is an odd translation, but it has been postulated that this is because it can be a tissue substance. it has also been suggested that, deep underground though it is, it may only be the first layer under the surface.
