Canned food is packed in a series of standard sizes of cans. In the U.S., a number 2 can is about 2 cups, number 10 is 12 or 13 cups, and there are various other sizes between. The sizes are quite uniform and the cans are used for all kinds of things. Because it takes so much tooling to manufacture a new can size, manufacturers use only a small number of different sizes.
