Michael Russell

Michael Russell (Mike Russell) was a member of the Scottish Parliament for the South of Scotland region between 1999 and 2003. He was Chief Executive of the SNP in the period prior to this election and has been an active member of the SNP for over three decades, often working closely with party leader, Alex Salmond.
After losing his seat in the Scottish Parliament, Russell focussed on his work as an author and newspaper columnist, commenting on various aspects of Scottish culture. Russell's talents are also in demand as a political commentator and his frequent television appearances, largely unpaid, are a major contribution to the SNP's public profile.
Though no longer an MSP he continues, at her request, to campaign for justice for Shirley McKie. The case now has international significance.
Many SNP members see Russell's absence from the Scottish Parliament as a great loss to the SNP's profile and performance there. He is now seeking selection as a candidate for the 2007 elections in response to requests from across Scotland.
