Premiere (or première, from the French première, "first") generally means "a first performance". This can apply to plays, movies and so on. Premieres for theatrical, musical and other cultural presentations can be extravagant affairs, attracting large numbers of socialites and much media attention. At a festive film premiere the main actors may be present.

Premieres may be "worldwide" - that is, the first showing of the performance ever, or regional - for example, a country-specific premiere. A film may be shown at a film festival before it is released in movie theaters in general.
