- "DEF" is also an acronym for Design Exchange Format in Electronic design automation domain.
The word def is hip hop (including graffiti) slang for 'great', 'ill', 'dope', 'fly'--generally, a positive adjective. If something is 'def' then it is classed as being very good. Its long form meaning is DEFinitive. If something is very definitive in its representation of its genre or classification, it is 'def'.
The term originated in New York in the early 1980s. It made it into the Oxford English Dictionary, and members of the rap community subsequently had a funeral for the word, with a eulogy performed by Al Sharpton. Template:Ref

- In the UK, to 'def someone out' is street slang and can also mean to ignore someone or to forget about them.
