- Melita (Malta) is incorporated into the Roman Republic.
- October, Hannibal crosses the Alps and invades Italy.
- In November, Hannibal defeats the Romans under Publius Cornelius Scipio the elder in a small cavalry fight, known as the Battle of the Ticinus, in which Scipio's son, the later Scipio Africanus, was reputed to have been fought in the battle and saved his father.
- December 18 - Roman army under Consul Titus Sempronius Longus was defeated in the Battle of Trebia River.
- Gnaeus Cornelius Scipio invaded Spain and defeated Hanno, gaining control of the Ebro
