9 to 5

From Free net encyclopedia

9 to 5 is a phrase which refers to the time at which some office employees work each day. These hours are the standard business hours in the United States and are an incarnation of the eight-hour day. The term 9 to 5 is also used as a slang term for a day job; for example, "My 9 to 5 is at a law office, but my real love is playing in the band." It is also more commonly used in a way where a person is not simple, dull, or works in a office (which would be considered boring and meaningless in the following way): "I'm not exactly a nine-to-five guy." (George Clooney said this line in Out of Sight)

The phrase became the title of two different songs: 9 to 5 by Dolly Parton and 9 to 5 by Sheena Easton, which had the title “Morning Train (9 to 5)” for its North American release.

Also refers to the name of a 1980 movie (specifically Nine to Five) starring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlin, for which Parton's above-referenced song served as a theme song. The movie was followed by a short lived TV series called 9 to 5.
