An abrasive is usually a material that is used to smooth, machine, or, in some cases, roughen another softer material through extensive rubbing. Some common examples of abrasive minerals and objects are:

- Borazon or Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN)

- Emery (mineral) (impure corundum)
