Achiote, or Achiotl, (Bixa orellana) is a shrub or small tree from the tropical regions of the Americas, also known also by its Tupi name of urucum. It is best known as the source of annatto, produced from the brown and red heart-shaped fruit. The fruit is not edible, but is used for the orange-red pulp that covers the seeds. This can be used as a dye by stirring the seeds in water. Its other uses include various medicines that can be made from parts of the tree, including remedies for sunstroke, tonsilitis, burns, leprosy, pleurisy, apnoea, rectal discomfort, and headaches.
"Achiote paste" is a name for the spice mixture recado rojo.
This plant is sometimes used by the natives of Brazil to make lipstick.Template:Tree-stub
