Ad Melkert

Ad Melkert (February 12, 1956) is a Dutch politician and an Executive Director of the World Bank.

He was member of the Second Chamber of the Dutch Parliament from 1986 to 2003, and party leader for the Dutch Social Democrats from 2001 to 2002. From 1994 to 1998 he was Minister of Social Affairs and Employment in the first cabinet of Wim Kok. He became parliamentary leader in July 1998.

Ad Melkert has a Master's degree in Political Sciences from the University of Amsterdam.

Some supporters of Pim Fortuyn, a controversial politician in the Netherlands who was assassinated during the election campaign in 2002, blame Melkert for creating a climate in which the murder of Fortuyn could take place. Ad Melkert resigned after this tragic event and the poor election results.
