Adelphi University is a private coeducational nationally accredited institute of higher education, with its main campus located in Garden City, in Nassau County, New York. It is the oldest institution of higher learning on Long Island. The college was founded in 1896 in Brooklyn, New York, and takes its name from its location on Adelphi Street in Brooklyn, where it is related to the Adelphi Academy, a private secondary school. The Garden City campus was established in 1929. Five of the Garden City campus buildings were designed by noted architectural firm McKim, Mead, and White. Today the university also has campuses in New York City, Poughkeepsie, and Hauppauge. According to New York Magazine in 2004 Adelphi surpassed Hofstra University, Long Island University C.W. Post Campus and State University of New York at Stony Brook as the #1 college in Long Island, and continues to expand every year. The university has announced construction of new academic facilities and expansion of existing structures commencing in March 2006.
