Akron, Michigan

Akron is a village in Tuscola County of the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 461. The village is located on the southern edge of Akron Township and is partially within Fairgrove Township.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 461 people, 173 households, and 125 families residing in the village. The population density was 187.4/km² (483.5/mi²). There were 188 housing units at an average density of 76.4/km² (197.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 97.61% White, 0.00% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.43% from other races, and 1.74% from two or more races. 6.07% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 173 households out of which 35.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.6% were married couples living together, 13.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.7% were non-families. 23.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.06.

In the village the population was spread out with 29.7% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 18.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 85.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.0 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $35,208, and the median income for a family was $35,313. Males had a median income of $31,806 versus $23,295 for females. The per capita income for the village was $14,570. 17.1% of the population and 12.2% of families were below the poverty line. 26.2% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
