Princely History
The princely state of Alwar was founded by Pratap Singh, a Rajput of ancient lineage, in the second half of the 18th century. His adopted son, Bakhtawar Singh, aided the British against the Marathas, and after the battle of Laswari (1803), signed a treaty of alliance with the British East India Company. A few years later, he ventured an armed incursion into neighbouring Jaipur, another similar vassal of the British, and was defeated; a fresh engagement was made, prohibiting him from political intercourse with other states without British consent. In 1857 Raoraja Bane Singh sent a force of Muslims and Rajputs to relieve the British garrison in Agra. The Muslims however deserted; the rest were defeated by the rebels.
Following the independence of India in 1947, Alwar acceded into India, and later merged with three other princely states of eastern Rajputana to form the Matsya Union on March 18, 1948. The union merged with certain other princely states and the federal territory of Ajmer to form the present-day Indian state of Rajasthan on May 15, 1949.
Alwar is famous for its Sariska National Sanctuary, which until they were lost to poachers in 2005, was home to wild tigers . Alwar is an industrial centre for the region, and has a military cantonment named Itarana.
