Amalaric

From Free net encyclopedia

Amalaric or Amalarico in Spanish (died 531), king of the Visigoths, son of Alaric II, was a child when his father fell in battle against Clovis I, king of the Franks, in (507). Gesalec was chosen king and the child Amalaric was carried for safety into Hispania, which country and Provence were thenceforth ruled by his maternal grandfather, Theodoric the Ostrogoth, acting through his vice regent, Theudis, an Ostrogothic nobleman. In 522 the young Amalaric was proclaimed king, and four years later, on Theodoric's death, he assumed full royal power in Hispania and that part of Languedoc called Septimania, relinquishing Provence to his cousin Athalaric. He married Chrotilda, daughter of Clovis; but his disputes with her, he being an Arian and she a Catholic, brought on him the penalty of a Frankish invasion by Childebert I, king of Paris, in which he lost his life in 531.

Konami has twice included flying, angelic archer enemies in its Castlevania series of games, tying them to the story of Amalaric's demise. In Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, there is a blue-tinted angelic enemy known as "Sniper of Goth," whose description reads "Slew Amalaric of the Goths." In Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, the enemy appears again and is functionally identical, although its name is now "Amalaric Sniper" and its description now reads "A fearsome archer and a fallen angel."
