Antonov An-10

From Free net encyclopedia

Image:Antonow An-10.jpg The Antonov An-10 "Ukraine" (NATO reporting name: "Cat") was a four-engined turboprop passenger transport aircraft. There have been 12 hull-loss accidents with a total of 371 fatalities up to 2004. It first flew in 1957. 108 were built. The aircraft was developed simultaneously with a cargo version Antonov An-12 (more than 1200 built). The specification required the aircraft to be able to operate from unprepared airfields.

After an accident due to a lack of pitch manoevrability, stabilizer fins were removed and the plane received the name "An-10 A". The capacity increased to 110 seats.

The type was withdrawn from service in 1978 after an accident that revealed a structure weakness of the wing base. At the same time, her sister An-12 (that shares 90% of components with An-10) appeared to be very robust and is still in service in many countries. After the withdrawal of An-10, it was replaced by Il-18 and An-24 initially, then later by Tupolev Tu-134.
