An aspirator is a common piece of laboratory equipment. It provides a strong suction via the Venturi effect. It needs only a continuous stream of water to operate. The aspirator fits over a faucet and has a hose barb on one side. When water flows through the aspirator, gas will be sucked in through the hose barb. It is cheap to manufacture and operate.

The strength of the vacuum produced is limited by the vapor pressure of water (24 mmHg at 25 degrees Celsius).
