AutoCAD DWG

From Free net encyclopedia

DWG, short for "drawing", is a file format for CAD drawings. It was originally used by the Interact CAD package Template:Ref, and then taken over by Autodesk for their AutoCAD program. The DWG format, along with its ASCII variant, DXF, has become the de facto standard file format for CAD drawing exchange.

Historically, Autodesk has been reluctant to release information about DWG, especially their later additions and extensions. In 1998, an effort was launched to create an alternative standard for DWG, OpenDWG. The OpenDWG format aims to be compatible with DWG, but strictly as an open standard.
