Template:Infobox Software Avant Browser is a freeware Internet Explorer shell. The latest version, Avant Browser 10.2.39, was released on April 02, 2006. It runs on Windows 98 and above.

Features

Originally a clone of Opera with the Internet Explorer engine, Avant offers many options present in Opera, which do not exist in the standard Internet Explorer:

  • Flash blocker: Downloads of Flash, pictures, videos, sounds and ActiveX components can be blocked.
  • Pop-up blocker: Pop-ups are blocked by default (only present in normal Internet Explorer for Windows XP)
  • Mouse functions: Links can be opened in the background, and mouse gestures have been implemented. For example the scroll button on the mouse can be set to open links in the background or foreground as opposed to Internet Explorer, where you have to right click and click on "Open Link in New Window."
  • Passwords: You can choose to have Avant Browser store your passwords via Roboform, so you don't have to type them each time you visit a page. This is a good option if you are the only one with access to your computer, but it also has a function to require the user to enter a master password to access them, in the case of a public computer.
  • Multi-Window browsing: Multiple web pages can be browsed simultaneously, in one main window.
  • Fullscreen modes: The Avant Browser fullscreen mode can hide the entire interface, allowing for more desktop space than the normal Internet Explorer.
  • Search engines: Yahoo! and Google search engine interfaces are built-in the browser.
  • URL Aliases: Gives you the opportunity to create aliases for specific websites, which can be entered into the address bar instead of the URL.
  • Records cleaner: Usage tracks can be easily removed.
  • Safe Recovery: After a crash previously opened pages are still available.
  • Skins: The browser look can be changed by skins.
  • Web Feeds (RSS/Atom) Reader: Display and handle Web Feeds (RSS/Atom)

The browser's author, Anderson Che, is currently working on a new project, temporarily called "Orca Browser", which is an Avant Browser-like shell of Firefox. It keeps the above features plus some more advantages, like ads-blocking.
