Bad Gandersheim

Bad Gandersheim is a city in southern Lower Saxony, Germany, located in the District of Northeim. Population 11,073 (2003). The city includes 16 surrounding villages.
The city is a spa town (hence the Bad in the name) due to two mineral springs.
The city dates back to 852, when a monastery was created in Brunshausen. In 990 the monastery received the market and tax rights. During the 10th century, Gandersheim was one of the most important towns of Saxony; the poet Hrosvit lived here. In 1159 Gandersheim was first mentioned as a city.
