Bay class landing ship dock (auxiliary)

From Free net encyclopedia

The Bay class landing ships dock have been designed as replacements for the ageing Round Table class LSLs. They were at first classified as Alternative Landing Ship Logistic (ALSL). However, they have been reclassified as Landing Ship Dock (Auxiliary) (LSD(A)), as they developed into a form very much more like an LSD than an LSL, with the superstructure forward and a large flight deck aft. In place of the beaching capability of the 'Sir' class, these ships will have a docking well in the stern capable of accommodating an LCU Mk 10. They will have capacity for an Embarked Military Force of 356, with an overload of 500, and are based on the Royal Schelde 'Enforcer' design, similar to Dutch and Spanish LPDs.

The four ships are:

  • RFA Largs Bay
  • RFA Lyme Bay
  • RFA Mounts Bay
  • RFA Cardigan Bay

"Largs and Lyme", as shipyard staff call them, are being built by Swan Hunter on the Tyne, whilst Mounts Bay and Cardigan Bay are being built by BAE Systems Naval Ships at Govan on the Clyde.
