Template:Infobox Film Before Sunrise (1995) is a drama film directed by Richard Linklater and written by Linklater and Kim Krizan.

The movie follows Jesse, an American on his way to Vienna to catch a flight back to America, and Celine, a French woman traveling to Paris to attend school at La Sorbonne. They meet on a train and after talking for a while Jesse convinces Celine to get off the train with him and walk around Vienna with him the rest of the night talking.

The plot is best described as minimalistic since not much other than talking happens. The two characters' ideas, perspectives on life, love, reincarnation, etc. are detailed and thought out. Jesse is a cynic, and Celine, a romantic. Taking place over the course of one night, their limited time together is always on their minds and lends to their revealing more than they normally would about themselves since both believe they will never again see one another.

The idea of this movie originally came from director Richard Linklater who shared similar experiences with a woman named Amy. He spent a whole night talking and browsing through the streets of Philadelphia.

Review

Before Sunrise received high critical praise at the time of its release. Over time many critics have called it the greatest romance of the modern era due in large to the fact that the characters romance takes center stage. How they get to know one another, sharing thoughts, ideas, fears, insecurities, and feelings takes the place of an old tired plot device. The film has received a rare perfect 100% positive reviews on Rottentomatoes.com.

In 2004, Before Sunset a long awaited sequel was released to as much positive reviews as its predecessor. Many critics would go on to agree that both movies together have painted an accurate, and believable romance in the last 30 years.
