History
The Beretta 92FS Vertec was designed for self-defense and law enforcement use. One major design goal was to reduce its grip size to allow small handed users to be able to use it with greater ease then the Beretta 92FS. Another goal was to reduce its length somewhat compared to a Beretta 92FS.
Specifications
Very similar to a Beretta 92FS, the Beretta 92FS Vertec uses a different alloy frame that has a thiner and smaller grip and that is fitted with a front equipment rail where a light or laser can be fitted. The barrel is somewhat shorter and thus less prone to damage at its muzzle. Both the front and rear sights are mounted in tapered dovetails on the slide.
Intended market
The Beretta 92FS Vertec is well suited for police or self-defense use.
Design advantages
Like the Beretta 92FS the Beretta 92FS Vertec is a safe, accurate and reliable pistol that is easy to use, even for people with smaller hands. It is also possible to fit a tactical light or a laser pointer which are features that appeal law enforcement users. Like the Beretta 92FS the slide is covered with Bruniton and the barrel bore is hard chromed. The Inox version has its slide and barrel made out of stainless steel. Like on the Beretta 92FS the slide mounted manual safety and decocking device which disconnects the trigger makes this pistol safe to unload. The Vertec line of pistols also feature a slide that has a dovetailed front sight. This allows a wide variety of sights such as night sights and fiber optic sight not available on a standard 92FS.
Limitations
Some amateur shooters believe the Beretta 92/96 series pistols have limitations, including not being well suited for use in deserts, jungles and arctic areas; the need for greater spring maintenance and cleaning over other designs; and the belief that the Bruniton® finish wears down quickly which leads to corrosion and more slide to frame play.
However, none of these claims have actually been proven conclusively, and the 92/96 series remains one of the most strenuously tested handgun designs ever created. After being put through testing by the U.S. military, it has remained the standard sidearm of the U.S. Armed Forces. The initial saftey concerns were due to a notoriously weak slide in it's early production runs in the late 1980's, which have since been fixed in the later models, including the F and FS series models. The typical talk in guns shops around the United States of the Berettas not being as reliable as other 9mm models have been mainly due to these earlier malfunctions.
