History

First appearing in 1999, the Beretta 92G Elite model came into being on demand of sports shooting competitors.

Specifications

The Beretta 92G Elite is fitted with the heavy Brigadier slide and a slide mounted decocking device. It is based on the Beretta 92G. The slide is made out of carbon steel, the frame is black anodized aluminium alloy. The stainless barrel is slightly shorter than on other Beretta 92 pistols in order to reduce the risk of damaging the barrel muzzle.

Intended market

The Beretta 92G Elite is a sports and law enforcement pistol.

Design advantages

The Beretta 92G Elite retained all the reliability advantages of Beretta 92 line, plus the added advantages of the longer lasting heavy (Brigadier) slide. The Brigadier slide also allows for interchangable dovetailed front sights. As there is no manual safety, it is quicker into action than comparable FS models.

Limitations

Some amateur shooters believe the Beretta 92/96 series pistols have limitations, including not being well suited for use in deserts, jungles and arctic areas; the need for greater spring maintenance and cleaning over other designs; and the belief that the Bruniton® finish wears down quickly which leads to corrosion and more slide to frame play.

However, none of these claims have actually been proven conclusively, and the 92/96 series remains one of the most strenuously tested handgun designs ever created.
