Bootleg
From Free net encyclopedia
Bootleg was a term which originally referred to the shank or top part of a boot, the part which is around the leg instead of the foot. From the practice of hiding small items in a boot shaft to smuggle them past the authorities, the word became a verb, bootlegging, meaning "to smuggle" and an adjective, describing something that has been smuggled (or, more rarely, stolen). Those involved in the activity of bootlegging are often known as bootleggers.
The term bootleg can also refer to:
- Bootleg recording, an otherwise unavailable audio or video recording distributed without the artist's consent
- Bootleg liquor, an alcoholic beverage sold without regard to legal regulations and taxes
- Bootleg play, a tactic in American football
- Bootleg turn, a car maneuver
- Bootleg pants, trousers which flare-out at the bottom of the legs and thus can cover the wearer's shoes.
- BOOTLEG, an Australian television program
Although not technically correct, it may also refer to:
- Pirate copy, an unauthorised duplicate of material already commercially available, sold illegally for significantly less than the standard retail price
- Counterfeit merchandise
- Bastard pop, music which contains unlicensed samples of other music
