DB Character Listing - Category |
Broly is a fictional character in the movies of the anime Dragon Ball Z, and factored heavily in movies 8, 10, and 11. He is one of the few remaining Saiyans, voiced by Bin Shimada in the original Japanese features and in the FUNimation English dubs by Cynthia Cranz (as a child) and Vic Mignogna (as an adult). He hates Goku above all else, to the point of seemingly losing his sanity. Broly's name, like almost all Saiyan characters, stems from a pun on vegetables, in this case the word broccoli. His first appearance was in the movie Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan.

Biography
At birth, Goku was born with a power level of 2, while Broly was born with the astonishing level of 10,000. This is an unusually high level of strength, especially for a newly born infant; Raditz, an average low level adult Saiyan warrior has a power level of 1,200 (first appearance), and Vegeta, an adult elite Saiyan warrior, has a power level of 18,000 (first appearance). On the other hand, the average adult human (such as the farmer seen as the start of the DBZ series) has a rating hovering around 5. Broly's exceptional gifts marked him as a mutant, possibly even as the Legendary Super Saiyan.
King Vegeta feared the boy and what he might come to be, and gave the order for the infant's execution. Broly's father Paragus (a takeoff of Asparagus) begged the king to spare the life of his son, arguing that the powerful Saiyan infant could be an aid to the young prince Vegeta in the future. King Vegeta pointed out that the child could actually become powerful enough to overthrow the prince, and ended the argument by sentencing Paragus to death, shooting him with a ki blast.
Up until this time since birth, Broly was noticeably disturbed by Goku, who was crying incessantly in the adjoining infant pod. Two Saiyans in the nursery commented on both the difference in power level and the fact that Goku's cries were having such an effect on Broly. The crying would drive Broly to insanity, and a hatred towards Goku that he carried all throughout his life. His troubles would only double, as the young Broly is stabbed with a dagger through the chest, and both he and his father are thrown in a heap and left to die. But Broly survived the attempt at infanticide, only growing stronger still from the Saiyan ability to recover and grow greatly in strength from cases of near-death.
Image:Broly&ControlledSSJBroly.jpg Later on that same day, Frieza acts on his own fear of the legend and attacks Planet Vegeta; killing King Vegeta and summoning a Death Ball to decimate the Saiyans' planet. Amid the destruction, Broly senses the danger, and to protect Paragus and himself Broly encases themselves in a powerful protective shield of ki, grabbing his father and flying him to safety. As the planet explodes, the two of them are able to escape without incident.
Though both survived, as Broly grew to adulthood, Paragus realized all was not well. As insane as the boy's level of power was his mental instability was greater; Paragus had lost whatever influence he might have had over his son. Fearing for his safety, and believing Broly would destroy world after world if left to his own devices, Paragus has a scientist rig a special control to keep Broly under restraint. Successful, Paragus initiates a plan to rekindle Saiyan dominance, plotting to use Earth as a base of operations and have revenge on the son of their would-be killer, Vegeta, at the same time. Broly's next encounter with Goku led to him breaking the restraint of the device. No longer under control, he kills his own father, and pummels Trunks, Goku, Son Gohan, Vegeta and Piccolo in a titanic battle until they channeled all of their energy into Goku, who used the energy in one last punch, which landed exactly in the area where Broly had been stabbed as a newborn. This wound, which had never healed completely, was the only weak spot on his body, and thus the blow seemingly killed Broly.
Image:SSJBroly&LSSJBroly.jpg After the fight with Goku, Broly managed to land on Earth in pursuit of revenge. Broly slipped into a coma in the impact crater, which then filled up with water and froze over. While Broly was in the coma, Gohan grew up, Son Goten was born and Goku died. As a child, Goten was very similar in appearance to Goku (as a child); they even sound the same. By matter of chance, Goten happened to cry within hearing distance of Broly, awaking the Saiyan and his fury.
Once awakened, Broly tried to seek his revenge on Goten, mistaking him for Goku. Despite Broly's main attention at Goten, Trunks suffered heavy attacks as well, Broly also clearly dominated both Gohan and Videl, who were also present at the battlefield. It was only after spiritual help from Goku that they were able to finally kill Broly. This was achieved with a triple Kamehameha attack that carried Broly straight through the sun.

This is not the last we see of Broly. In a later movie, it is revealed that a local village Witch Doctor preserved a sample of Broly's blood, which was used to create a clone of Broly, using bioengineering techniques. Bio-Broly then goes on a rampage, with Goten and Trunks as his main adversaries. However, Broly also attacked Android 18, Krillin and Hercule, with the last one brought over to fight the bio-engineered foes, but Android 18 shows that she can simply beat them all, however she gets seriously pounded by Bio-Broly. Bio-Broly was later destroyed when he was solidified by water and then blasted into peices by Trunks and Goten.
Forms
- Giji Super Saiyan - In a flashback during DBZ Movie #8, an infant Broly reached this form in order to escape with his father from Frieza's attack on Planet Vegeta.
- Super Saiyan - The form Broly takes during his first fight in Dragonball Z movie 8 against Goku is actually his Super Saiyan form. In this form his muscles swell slightly from his previously unspectacular body. The bluish hair and tanish skin are caused by the device his father attached on Broly's forehead in order to control, calm and tame him to a certain extent. When activated, it automatically restricts Broly from surpassing this form. However, when Broly and Goku come face to face for the second time in the movie, Broly's anger becomes too strong for the device to control, and shatters, allowing Broly to transcend to Legendary Super Saiyan.
(Note that after Broly is free from the device's control, the appearance of his Super Saiyan form returns to normal.)
- Legendary Super Saiyan - This maniacal form is very similar to an Ultra Super Saiyan, but with several notable differences. His size, muscle mass, strength, and speed are extraordinarily far beyond that of Ultra Super Saiyan, to the point of being ridiculous. And unlike other Super Saiyan forms that decrease energy due to effects such as fatigue, this form gradually increases his energy as a battle continues adding to the awesomeness of his strength. Additionally, his irises or pupils in his eyes seemingly disappear. His seeming invinciblity stems from his power, not his muscles. His transformation to this form involves unleashing his power in an explosive bubble-shaped blast of energy.
(It should be noted that although he does reach the Legendary Super Saiyan form, he is far too young to be the Super Saiyan of legend, being that he is the same age as Goku. A common misconception is that he is the same Super Saiyan that Vegeta was talking about when he related the legend in the Frieza Saga. That Super Saiyan lived and self destructed before Vegeta was born, and Vegeta is older than Goku or Brolly.)
- Bio - While this appearance may look different, Bio-Broly is simply the created clone of Broly. In Dragonball Z movie 11 Broly was released from his cloning tank. As the fluid that he was grown in that kept him inert was drained Broly began to wake up and he violently destroyed his tank. The fluid becomes a very corrosive acid like fluid when exposed to air and becomes something that takes on the properties of whatever genetic material it absorbs (think The Blob). The scientists closed the emergency containment wall around Broly's tank to contain the fluid. Unfortunately you can't contain a Legendary Super Saiyan and Broly destroyed the containment walls. Furthermore when they closed the walls they covered Broly in the fluid and he was partially absorbed. This covered him in some kind of slime and twisted Broly's appearance into what is known as Bio-Broly. Worse yet it gave the Fluid the properties of Broly making it virtually unstoppable.
Power level
There is no universal consensus on how powerful Broly is in comparison to other Dragon Ball villains and a wide range has emerged believing him to be anywhere from slightly less powerful then Perfect Cell to being the strongest character in the series.
