Elections

Elections of 75 Brussels regional deputies, 89 since 2004, take place every five years[1]. Here is the list of past regional elections:

Functions

The Brussels Parliament role mainly consists in controlling the government of the Brussels-Capital region, approving the budget and creating and passing laws[2].

Flemish representation

Women representation

Allochtoon (migrant) minorities representation

In the first (1989) Brussels Parliament there was no deputy from the non European minorities, and only less than 5 candidates, except for the Ecolo Maria Nagy Patino, from Colombia. In 1995, several were elected, 3 from Morocco (Sfia Bouarfa, Mohamed Daïf and Mostafa Ouezekhti) and 1 from Tunisia (Mahfoudh Romdhani), joined in 1999 by 4 other Moroccans (Mohamed Azzouzi, Fatiha Saïdi, Fouad Lahssaïni and Amina Derbaki Sbaï) and 1 Israeli (Yaron Pesztat).

Since the 2004 elections the Brussels Parliament is probably the political assembly in the world where the level of representation of ethnic minorities is the highest (near mirror representation) with, out of 72 francophone elected deputies, 12 were Moroccans, 2 Turks, 1 Guinean, 1 Congolese and 1 Tunisian. One out of 17 "Flemish" elected deputies is Moroccan.
