Image:PunjabCarnelianSeal.JPG Carnelian is a red or reddish-brown variant of chalcedony. The word is derived from the Latin word meaning flesh, in reference to the flesh color sometimes exhibited.
Carnelian also describes a particular shade of the color red. The alternate spelling "cornelian" is sometimes used, perhaps evolving from the adoption of the color as one of the official colors of Cornell University.
