Catamite

From Free net encyclopedia

A catamite was the younger partner in a pederastic relationship between two males in the ancient world, especially Ancient Rome. The word is derived from the Latin catamitus, itself borrowed from the Etruscan catmite, a corruption of the Greek Ganymedes, the boy who was seduced by Zeus and became his beloved and cupbearer in Greek mythology.

Catamites are referenced in South Park episode 708, "South Park Is Gay!", in which Queer Eye for the Straight Guy leads to homosexuality becoming popular in South Park. When Craig and Cartman argue over who is more gay, Craig says he's not just gay, he's a catamite.

"It was the afternoon of my eighty-first birthday, and I was in bed with my catamite when Ali announced that the archbishop had come to see me." This is the attention-grabbing first sentence of Anthony Burgess's 1980 novel, "Earthly Powers".
