Chakotay (born 2326) is a fictional character of the Star Trek universe, played by Robert Beltran, and was the second-in-command of the USS Voyager, to Kathryn Janeway in the science fiction television series Star Trek: Voyager.

Overview

As a boy, Chakotay resented his Native American tribe's and father Kolopak's backwater traditions and spirituality and dreamed of entering Starfleet Academy, which he finally managed at 15, under the guidance of Captain Hikaru Sulu. (Some sources contend that it was Sulu's daughter Demora Sulu that sponsored him.) He attended the Academy from 2344 to 2348. When his home planet, a Native American colony, was taken over by the Cardassians, he left Starfleet and joined the Maquis.

Chakotay was a Maquis captain of his own ship, the Valjean. This vessel was destroyed after both it and Voyager were transported to the Delta Quadrant. Chakotay joined Voyager's crew as second in command, serving under Captain Kathryn Janeway and accepting the field rank of Lieutenant Commander. After this, the former opponent became loyal to Janeway and a close friend.

The Voyager episode "Endgame" gave Chakotay's date of death as 2394. However, the events in "Endgame" are not set in stone as they occurred in alternate timeline.

Chakotay's Maquis ship was never given an official name onscreen until a later episode, Repression, where a computer readout screen gives its name: Valjean, named for the ex-convict Jean Valjean in Les Miserables who tries to redeem himself through good works.

The post series finale books see Janeway promoted to admiral, Chakotay formally returning to Starfleet and given command of Voyager. The book series reveals that he has a younger sister who has become a spritual leader among their people.
