Chatom is a town located in Washington County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the town is 1,193. The city is the county seat of Washington CountyTemplate:GR.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 28.2 km² (10.9 mi²). 28.2 km² (10.9 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 1,193 people, 449 households, and 308 families residing in the town. The population density was 42.3/km² (109.7/mi²). There were 523 housing units at an average density of 18.6/km² (48.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 67.23% White, 32.10% Black or African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.17% from two or more races. 0.50% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 449 households out of which 38.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.6% were married couples living together, 18.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.10.
In the town the population was spread out with 27.9% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 23.9% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 19.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 83.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 73.4 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $31,319, and the median income for a family was $41,563. Males had a median income of $36,518 versus $19,750 for females. The per capita income for the town was $16,650. 23.5% of the population and 17.3% of families were below the poverty line. 34.4% of those under the age of 18 and 20.9% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
