The word check has these meanings:
- In finance, a cheque (spelled check in American English) is an order for transfer of money.
- A tick (checkmark), a mark used for verification or notation.
- In board games such as chess, a check is a threat to capture the king or a similar piece.
- In poker, check has two meanings:
- To check is to decline to bet. See betting (poker).
- Check is a less commonly used term for chip.
- In the Glass Container Industry a check is a small crack in the glass.
- A rain check is an agreement to provide to a customer at sale price an item that has run out of.
- In contact sports such as ice hockey, checking or cross-checking is the act of physically keeping an opponent restrained.
- A checked patern in fabric and weaving is made up of small squares (see tartan)
