Chembur

Chembur is a suburb of Mumbai, India, as well as a railway station on the Harbour Line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway.

Originally a picnic-spot on the north-eastern outskirts of Mumbai, Chembur is now considered a central suburb.

It is also a major transportation hub. Major arteries originate at Chembur and lead to Navi Mumbai (new Bombay), Ghatkopar, Sion, Kurla and Mulund-Thane. The Central Railway’s Harbour Line, services Chembur.

Starting out as an industrial area, Chembur is now a largely residential suburb. Old bungalows and villas are making way for high-rise apartments. Chembur has a cosmopolitan population that is dominated by Tamilians, Maharashtrians, Sindhis and Gujaratis.

Referred to as the 'gas chamber of Mumbai' because of its proximity to garbage incinerators; Chembur's air pollution is on the rise.

Many past and current Bollywood celebrities like Raj Kapoor, Shilpa Shetty, Anil Kapoor, Malaika Arora and Vidya Balan hail from Chembur. The first building in Chembur is the 'Pioneer House' in Chembur's Ambedkar Udyan near 16th road, developed in 1928.

Some of the famous eateries in Chembur are:

Gupta Bhel Puri: The landmark stall in Chembur, known for its mouthwatering snacks, > bhel, sev puri, dahi puri, paani puri, etc. Raj Kapoor was known to be a patron of this store. It is located off the Central Avenue, just next to the railway station.

Sanju's vada pav: The name says it all! Famous for its vada pavs - people who stayed at Chembur some time in their lives visit this store even today just for the vada pav!

Sadguru: Be in Chembur, and you must have Sadguru's paav bhaaji! Absolutely mouth watering! You will also get a range of fresh fruit juices here. Just adjacent to the railway station ... you just can't miss it.

Grand Central: Another of Chembur's landmarks. A high class restaurant which serves good vegetarian and non vegetarian fare.

Celebrations: This one is near the Diamond garden ... good food!

And then, there's also Orchids (towards Govandi) and Vaishali and a whole lot of other eateries.
