It causes chlamydia, a sexually transmitted disease, and trachoma, an eye infection that is a frequent cause of blindness. It is one of the smallest of all bacteria and its size may be as small as 500 nm in width, not much bigger than the largest viruses.

A vaccine for this bacteria has been elusive for over 25 years but recent advances in DNA research gives hope that one may be created soon.
