Coldstream, Victoria

From Free net encyclopedia

Coldstream is a small town just outside of greater Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is in the Local Government Area of the Shire of Yarra Ranges. A few kilometres to the west is Lilydale, generally regarded as the outermost limits of greater Melbourne proper.

In 1909, Dame Nellie Melba bought a cottage at Coldstream. The cottage is located at the current juncture of Maroondah Highway and Melba Highway (named in her honour). Melbourne's CBD is 49 kilometres to the west, along the Maroondah highway and then the Eastern Freeway.

Coldstream has a local primary school, a community centre, garbage dump and several farms. It had a railway station that was used for freight purposes up until the 1990s, but it has since been closed and the buildings demolished. The airstrip, Coldstream Airfield, is home to a flying school operated by the Royal Victorian Aero Club.
