Constituent Assembly

A constituent assembly is a body elected with the purpose of drafting, and in some cases, adopting a constitution. Examples of constituent assemblies include the:
- National Constituent Assembly - formed in 1789 during the French Revolution
- Norwegian Constituent Assembly - adopted the current Constitution of Norway in 1814.
- Russian Constituent Assembly - formed in January 1918 during the Russian October Revolution
- German National Assembly - enacted the Weimar Constitution in 1919, bringing into being the Weimar Republic.
- Constituent Assembly of Lithuania - elected in 1920 worked for two years and enacted the 1922 contitution.
- Third Dáil - also known as the Irish Constituent Assembly, was elected in 1922 and, in the same year, enacted the Constitution of the Irish Free State by means of which the Irish Free State seceded from the United Kingdom.
- Syrian Constituent Assemblies - formed in 1930 following the defeat of the Ottoman Empire and the introduction of the French Mandate, and in 1949 to reintroduce civilian rule after a series of military governments.
- National Assembly of the Republic of China (Taiwan) - also known as the National Constituent Assembly, enacted the Republic of China's current constitution in 1946.
- Constituent Assembly of Italy - formed on 13 July, 1946 following the referendum on republic or monarchy, dissolved four months after the adoption of the Constitution, on 12 May, 1948.
- Constituent Assembly of India - formed on 9 December, 1946 to write the Constitution, and serve as India's first Parliament, dissolving on 26 January, 1950 when India became a republic.
- Constituent Assembly of Pakistan - formed on 10 August, 1947 to write the Constitution, and serve as Pakistan's first parliament. It was dissolved on 24 October, 1954 and reconstituted after fresh elections on 28 May, 1955, lasting until 23 March, 1956 when Pakistan became a republic.
- Constituent Assembly of El Salvador - formed in 1982 as a provisional parliament and presidential electoral college, and charged with drafting a constitution.
- Constituent Assembly of Colombia - formed on February 5, 1991 to draft the country's 1991 constitution. It was dissolved in July 1991 when the document was adopted nationwide.
- Democratic Constitutional Congress of Peru - convened by Alberto Fujimori in 1992 to draft a new constitution.
