Cooper City, Florida

Cooper City is a city located in Broward County, Florida, USA. The city is named for Morris Cooper, who founded the community in 1959. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 27,939. As of 2004, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 29,446.[1]

Brian Piccolo Park in Cooper City is the location of one of the best cricket grounds in the United States, and in 2004 played host to first-class cricket when the United States cricket team played Canada in the ICC Intercontinental Cup. The park also home to one of the few cycling tracks in South Florida.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 17.4 km² (6.7 mi²). 16.4 km² (6.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.22% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 27,939 people, 9,123 households, and 7,827 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,698.8/km² (4,402.4/mi²). There were 9,289 housing units at an average density of 564.8/km² (1,463.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 89.10% White, 3.09% African American, 0.16% Native American, 4.09% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.65% from other races, and 1.87% from two or more races. 15.57% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 9,123 households out of which 51.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 70.8% were married couples living together, 11.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 14.2% were non-families. 10.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.06 and the average family size was 3.30.

In the city the population was spread out with 31.3% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 6.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 94.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $75,166, and the median income for a family was $78,172. Males had a median income of $51,931 versus $33,788 for females. The per capita income for the city was $27,474. 3.2% of the population and 2.9% of families were below the poverty line. 3.2% of those under the age of 18 and 4.7% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
