Cozad is a city located in Dawson County, Nebraska. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,163. The town is on the Great Plains of central Nebraska, along the Union Pacific Railroad and U.S. Highway 30, just north of the Platte River. The 100th meridian, which roughly marks the eastward boundary of the arid plains, passes through the town as is marked by a prominent sign across U.S. Highway 30. In the early 1860s, it was a stop along the Pony Express.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.4 km² (2.1 mi²). 5.4 km² (2.1 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water. Cozad has gained recognition recently with its depiction in the Jack Nicholson movie "About Schmidt".
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 4,163 people, 1,722 households, and 1,127 families residing in the city. The population density was 776.5/km² (2,007.2/mi²). There were 1,851 housing units at an average density of 345.3/km² (892.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.39% White, 0.17% African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 3.82% from other races, and 1.75% from two or more races. 10.95% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 1,722 households out of which 32.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.6% were married couples living together, 8.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.5% were non-families. 30.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.95.
In the city the population was spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 92.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $32,392, and the median income for a family was $43,413. Males had a median income of $27,217 versus $20,089 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,139. 12.1% of the population and 9.8% of families were below the poverty line. 17.1% of those under the age of 18 and 11.3% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
